What is pilling on upholstered fabric? – Furniture cleaning

Pilling is a phenomenon that occurs when fibers on the surface of a fabric become loose and start to form small balls or pills. These balls of fiber can be unsightly and can make the fabric feel rough to the touch. Pilling is common on fabrics that see a lot of use, such as clothing, upholstery, and bedding, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including abrasion, friction, and heat.

Pilling is more likely to occur on fabrics that are made from synthetic fibers, such as polyester because these fibers are more prone to shedding and fraying. However, pilling can also occur on natural fiber fabrics, such as wool, if they are not of high quality or if they are not treated properly.

To prevent pilling on fabrics, it’s a good idea to choose high-quality fabrics and to take care of them properly. This may involve regularly vacuuming or brushing the fabric to remove loose fibers, using protective covers or throws to prevent excessive wear, and avoiding placing fabrics in direct sunlight or close to heat sources. If pilling does occur, it can often be removed by using a fabric shaver or a special pilling comb to gently remove the pills from the surface of the fabric.
